I know there are some people who will disregard this, however, and I have two words to say to that group of ungrateful people! 1.0 - What is Final Fantasy? ---------------------------- Quoted From the alt.games.final-fantasy FAQ: " 'Final Fantasy' is a series of role-playing video games for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Sony PlayStation by Square Co. Ltd, a Japan-based video games company with offices in the USA and maybe a few other countries as well. What makes the Final Fantasy series unique is that every game sequel uses a different world from the game before it and different characters for this world, but usually maintains the same game engine, game play, and some of the different kinds of items used in the games. And for those people who think that video games are uneducational or rot young minds away need look no further - the Final Fantasy series of games usually contain items and characters taken out of either world history or different mythologies. Even some of the characters and places in the game have mythological functions to them." The Games came out in Japan before the United States. As a result, several games were not released in the United States. To futher confuse hard-core gamers, the US releases followed their own numbering system until FFVII, when Sony restored the Japan numbering to the US releases. As of now, the Japan FFII and FFIII and the FFIV hardtype will never be released in the US. Japan Release US Release ------------------------------------- (NES Releases) Final Fantasy Final Fantasy Final Fantasy II Never Released Final Fantasy III Never Released (SNES Releases) Final Fantasy IV Never Released (Hardtype) Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy II (Easytype) (SNES/PlayStation Releases) Final Fantasy V Never Released (SNES), Final Fantasy V (PSX) Final Fantasy VI Final Fantasy III (SNES), Final Fantasy VI (PSX) (PlayStation Releases) Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy VIII (Coming Soon) Also, there is Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (FF USA in Japan) which was released for the SNES, and Final Fantasy Tactics (Same in Japan) which was released for the PlayStation. Both games had similar functions to the Final Fantasy series, but are not considered canon with the Final Fantasy series. 1.05- Abbreviations ------------------- Throughout the FAQ, I'll refer to the Japanese Numbering System when talking about the Soundtracks, with the exception being FFMQ (Mystic Quest) and FFT (Tatics). (Example- FFV is Final Fantasy V) Also, the soundtracks should have abbreviations when I am referring to them later in the FAQ, so here is a listing of the abbreviations: Final Fantasy: Symphonic Suite FF:SS Final Fantasy III: Eternal Legend of the Wind FFIII:Wind Final Fantasy IV: Celtic Moon FFIV:CM Final Fantasy V: Dear Friends FFV:DF Final Fantasy VI: Grand Finale FFVI:GF Final Fantasy VII: Reunion FFVII:R Final Fantasy IV,V,VI Piano FF(IV,V,VI):P Final Fantasy: Pray FF:Pray Final Fantasy: Love Will Grow FF:LWG Final Fantasy IV: Minimum Album FFIV:MA Final Fantasy V+1 FFV+1 Final Fantasy V: Mambo De Chocobo FFV:MDC Final Fantasy VI: Special Tracks FFVI:ST(1 or 2) Final Fantasy VIII: Demo Album? FFVIII:Demo Final Fantasy VIII: Eyes On Me Single FFVIII:Single Final Fantasy: 1987-1994 FF:87-94 Final Fantasy: Mix FF:Mix Final Fantasy VI: Stars Volume 1 FFVI:SV1 Final Fantasy VI: Stars Volume 2 FFVI:SV2 Final Fantasy: Dragon & Star FF:D+S Final Fantasy: Wind & Fire FF:W+F 1.1- What is important about the Music? --------------------------------------- Each Final Fantasy game has had unique music (with the exception of several themes that are inclusive in every game) composed for every faucet of the game - from fighting to character themes to location themes - and even a twenty minute composed opera! (FFVI) Squaresoft composer Nobuo Uematsu composed every piece of music for all eight games, as well as FFMQ and FFT, and several other games for Squaresoft. Drawing from classical sources as well as many modern styles, each track of FF music is created to be unique for the character, location, and event taking place at a certain time in the game. 1.2- Who is Nobuo Uematsu? -------------------------- (From VideoGames.Com) "One of the series' most beloved aspects has been its sweeping musical scores. Melodic themes and character-specific leitmotifs combine into each of the games' songs. Uematsu is the master of many styles and each song is usually both immediately catchy andultimately complex. Uematsu has been compared to film composer John Williams. Both write scores which simultaneously capture a sense of the sweeping epic and the extremely personal. Over two dozen soundtracks of Uematsu's music can be purchased in Japan. The maestro has even released an independently composed solo album. When many fans think of Final Fantasy, the first thing that springs to mind is Uematsu's fantastic scores." 1.25- Is Nobuo Uematsu being replaced for FFIX? ---------------------------------------------- According to early reports, apparently Uematsu is being replaced by another composer for the FFIX. From www.ffnet.net: [ July 25th 23.02 GMT | Rob ] According to 'sources close to Square', the 'legendary' composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is said to have been chosen for, or possibly already begun work on, Final Fantasy IX. Sakamoto is well known for work on films world-wide, most notably from Madonna's 'Rain' video, and he has also won a Grammy for his work on 'The Last Emperor'. This news will come as a shock to many veterans, and newbies alike, who have become accustomed to resident Final Fantasy composer Nobou Uematsu and his legendary scores which, in many fan's eyes, makes Final Fantasy what it is. This is, of course, all unofficial with Square having yet to confirm any news with regards to Final Fantasy IX, let alone the game's musical composers. In fact, this news brings back memories in 1996 when the word was that Nobou Uematsu wasn't doing the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack because he was going through a 'mid-life crisis'. In 1998, Square said that Uematsu wouldn't be doing the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack because he had 'lost interest in video game music'. As most of you will know, Uematsu worked on both VII and VII's soundtracks, doing a fine job with both of them - most notably on Final Fantasy VIII which received critical acclaim. Then again, if previous reports of Final Fantasy IX and VIII being worked on at the same time by duel development teams are true, surely Nobou Uematsu won't have the time needed to work on Final Fantasy IX? In that case, Ryuichi Sakamoto would seem the natural alternative. We await concrete evidence... Updates will be added as further news and rumors come out. Also, keep in mind that this is a RUMOR, so anything could happen. 1.3- What kinds of FF soundtracks are out there? ------------------------------------------------ For starters, there are the Original Sound Versions/Tracks (OSV/OST), which are the tracks utilizing the hardware of the system the game uses. The NES arranged tracks are simplistic at best, because of the limitations of the 8-bit architecture. As of writing, FFVIII boasts the best computed orchestration available, with several tracks fooling the ordinary ear as to if they were really created with a live orchestra. (In fact, a couple were!) During FFIII, a live orchestrated version of several interconnecting themes was released, and since then some sort of live instrument orchestration has been composed and released for every FF game. FF IV, V, and VI have piano arrangements that were released with a book that contained the piano music. These are now collectors' items, since a limited number was printed and sold quickly. There is also several remix albums, albums with unreleased music from a few of the FF games, and a couple of vocal compilations. As of this writing, there are thirty-two known albums for or based from Final Fantasy games. 10 are OSV's, 6 are orchestrated, 5 include extra or unreleased tracks, 4 are compilations, 3 are piano collections, 2 are vocal albums, and 2 are (possibly) written for anime sequels to FF games. 1.4- Why is this FAQ needed? ---------------------------- Throughout the web, there are many different pages with information on the Final Fantasy soundtracks. Unfortunately, most end with track listings or have incomplete information. This FAQ will help solve that problem and produce a more complete picture of the Final Fantasy soundtrack world. 2.0- The Final Fantasy Soundtracks ---------------------------------- 2.1- The Original Sound Versions/Tracks (OSV/OST) ------------------------------------------------- 2.11- Final Fantasy 1+2 ----------------------- Title: Fantasy I & II Publisher: Polystar or Datam? (Anyone know for sure?) 2.9- Future Releases -------------------- 2.91- FFV+VI Soundtracks (FF Collections Edition?) ------------------------------------------------- The only information I have on this is that Square is bundling a compliation of the FFV and FFVI OST's with the American FF Collection that comes out for the Playstation later this year. Right now, they have a survey that asks for your favorite track off both soundtracks and then your favorite of those two. Check it out! They want a fan based compliation (finally!) so go to www.squaresoft.com and send that infomation in. 3.0- Facts About The Soundtracks -------------------------------- 3.1- What Are Common Themes In The Games? ----------------------------------------- There are four themes that have carried over into every game: The Prelude, The Battle theme, the Fanfare, and the Chocobo theme. 3.11- The Prelude ----------------- (From VideoGames.Com) "Every Final Fantasy game traditionally opens with a song called "The Prelude". Although easily recognized by its soaring arpeggios and soothing strings, each title offers a slightly different arrangement." 3.12- The Battle ---------------- Every FF game has some sort of battle music, which tends to be a high energy, fast-paced form of music to put the player in a fighting mood. FFVII is the only game so far to have slower battle music at a couple of points in the game, mainly related to events in the storyline. Also, the battle themes while challenging the main anatagonist all have a brooding, dark overtone. 3.13- The Fanfare ----------------- (From VideoGames.Com) "The "Victory Fanfare" plays after every victorious battle. In Final Fantasy I-VI, the entire victory theme is the same (albeit differently arranged). Only the initial trumpet fanfare has made the transition to games after Final Fantasy VII." 3.14- The Chocobo Themes ------------------------ Although FFII was the first rendition of the Chocobo theme, it has made a reappearance in some sort of fashion in every FF OST/OSV. The melody is very unique, and every sort of genre has been used to remake it for every game. 3.2- Chronology of the Soundtracks ---------------------------------- 1988: December 21- FFI+II OSV? 1991: July 15- FFIII OSV?
